"Reflections in the Rearview Mirror", now online

Winning the Diversity Visa Lottery changed the trajectory of a Romanian family in the 2000s. Moving to the United States opened up the prospect of a new life while testing the bonds between those who left and those who stayed behind. This turning point serves as the starting point for the documentary play "Reflections in the Rearview Mirror," written by Anca Munteanu, directed by Robert Kocsis, and produced by the LOUD Cultural Platform.

The play explores migration through the lens of family relationships, where the decision to leave has lasting emotional consequences. The promise of social mobility clashes with feelings of guilt, the need for belonging, and the uncertainty faced by those left behind. Viewed in retrospect, the emigration experience becomes an inquiry into how a family understands its past and renegotiates its ties.

The documentary perspective leaves room for humor, the characters' contradictions, and their resilience. Performed by actors Cristina Dănciulescu, Sabina Lazăr, and Alexandru Tudor, the story follows an extended family across two continents, whose bonds and solidarity go beyond mere kinship. The goal of this approach is to understand the people who embrace change, along with the expectations, hesitations, and courage it entails.

The artistic team includes Diana Miroșu (set design), Ada Anghel (choreography), Sandra Matache (costumes), Rareș Popescu (sound design), and Matei Preda (multimedia). The graphic identity was created by George Roșu.

The recording available below provides access to the performance and invites further reflection on migration, family memory, and the meanings we attach to belonging.
